Studies have found that gentle pressure on the eyes, as provided by the eye pillow, stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system - our "rest and digest" response. As well, clinical psychologists have told us that gently weighted masks can increase the production of serotonin and melatonin, improving both mood and sleep, respectively. I used the eye pillow during a practise knowing as Yoga Nidra, a guided relaxing/meditative practise normally done lying down.
